Spring Training and Spring Trainers

Updated: Mar 27, 2023

Phoenix is ethereal in March. The temperatures sit in the 70s, making for a perfect time to soak in some vitamin D, drink local beer and catch a Spring Training game from the lawn. This weekend I was able to go to my first ever Spring Training game in Mesa where the Los Angeles Angels played the Chicago Cubs at Sloan Park.

I met up with a group of friends at the top of the fifth inning (due to my inability to get ready on time, only exacerbated by the 35-minute parking line and subsequent walk over to the stadium) who had luckily

already claimed a nice plot of the GA lawn behind third base. If you are allergic to grass, a picnic blanket is an absolute must and my friend Amanda, brought the cutest patterned blanket that folded up into a bag. Once we said hello to everyone, Amanda, my boyfriend and I took to the concession stand. Three hotdogs, three beers and a plate of nachos later, we were back on the lawn and basking in the sun's golden effulgence.

If I could do it again, I'd leave a bit earlier, drink more water beforehand and wear shorts. I wore a white vintage Diamondbacks tee-shirt, Levi's boyfriend jeans and pastel platform Tevas. While the jeans were nice in the shade, with the sun I was just slightly too warm. My boyfriend and Amanda were both also wearing Tevas, which inspired me to think about the best shoes for the spring, spring trainers if you will.

1. Vans ComfyCush Slip On Floral Shoes

I saw these and my jaw dropped. The green flowers and groovy typeface saying "be kind to the earth" couldn't be more on brand for springtime. With Earth Day approaching, this would be an adorable finishing piece to any sundress or plain tee and jeans. Normally $58.99, they are currently 50 percent off on Pacsun's website. I love a good pair of patterned slip on Vans, and this one gets a comfortable upgrade with Vans ComfyCush. This pair is designed with a traditional slip-on fit, a floral pattern throughout, and a softer cushiony outsole that has you keepin' it comfy at all times.

2. AE Butterfly Canvas Platform Sneaker

If you are insanely lucky like I am and you landed tickets to Taylor Swift's coveted Era's Tour, these would be a perfect addition to any "Lover" ensemble. And with the months of TikTok Taylor Swift concert outfit inspo, you definitely are going to want to dress to impress. If you're not a Taylor fan, I still think these give off the warmest feminine springtime vibe, without coming off childish or immature.

3. Authentic Stackform OSF Shoe

I was not planning on having more than one pair of Vans on this list, but I found these while online window shopping and here we are. These 70s-themed oversized baby pink flowers have bloomed around the chunky platform base, practically screaming the word cute.

These lace up Vans still have the iconic low top silhouette, with the added girlie flair. The platform shoe has a 34 mm sidewall height, literally elevating any look.

I can picture these dressed up with a pink or white sundress or dressed down with a pair of boyfriend jeans and a hoodie.

4. Women's Indigo Sneakers - A New Day™

It seems as though the dad sneaker trend is sticking around longer than many fashion experts predicted. Despite some initial skepticism, the chunky and often colorful sneakers that were popular in the 90s have made a major comeback in recent years and show no signs of slowing down. While some people may still view them as a passing fad, the dad sneaker trend continues to blow up on my feed. For a sneaker you can wear all the time, I love these A New Day white sneakers. This is a great transitional footwear as the weather turns from flurries to sunbeams.
